Maintaining Your Air Conditioning Unit: What You Can Do and When to Call the Experts

We're always happy to educate our customers in Hertfordshire on matters relating to their air conditioning systems, so; when it comes to air conditioning (A/C) systems, proper maintenance is essential for efficiency, longevity, and indoor air quality. While Herts consumers can take some basic steps themselves, it’s vital to leave certain tasks to qualified engineers—you must only use engineers who are F Gas registered and your service company must be accredited by REFCOM, ensuring compliance with F-Gas Regulations.

But, here’s a simple guide to what you can safely maintain at home and why professional expertise is critical.

DIY A/C Maintenance Tips:

  1. Clean the filters regularly – Dust and debris can quickly clog indoor filters, reducing airflow and efficiency. Remove filters as per the manufacturer's instructions, clean them gently (often with water), and let them dry completely before reinstallation.

  2. Clear the outdoor condenser unit – Over time, leaves, twigs, and other debris can accumulate around the external unit, obstructing airflow and causing inefficiency. Safely remove such debris to keep the system running smoothly.

  3. Wipe down indoor and outdoor units – A simple wipe with a damp cloth can remove dust and dirt from the casing, helping to maintain the units' appearance and cleanliness.

  4. Conduct a smell test – If you notice unusual odours coming from the indoor unit when it’s running, this could indicate mould, mildew, or other issues. Take note and inform a professional if you detect any bad odours.

While these tasks are effective for day-to-day upkeep, the F-Gas Regulations highlight the importance of handling refrigerants responsibly. Only certified engineers can legally work with fluorinated gases in A/C systems, as mishandling can harm both the environment and the equipment. Choosing a REFCOM-registered company ensures your system is serviced or repaired by trained professionals who comply with these regulations.

By combining routine maintenance with expert care, you’ll enjoy a comfortable, energy-efficient home all year round—while doing your part for the planet. So, do what you can, but leave the heavy lifting to the pros!

Excellent Home office ac installation

"Hertfordshire Air Conditioning recently installed an ac system serving two bedrooms / offices. From the initial contact with Ken, through the site visit when he explained the various options, the transparent quote process, pre-installation discussions, the actual installation and the follow-up support, everything has been excellent and I would highly recommend the company to others. Ken and his engineers were friendly and very knowledgeable. The work has been carried out to a high standard and we are very happy with the Toshiba units, which look so much better than "standard" ac units."
